Brief

The clients are a couple who want to retire to a cottage in Mayo. The brief was to renovate and extend an existing cottage to bring it up to a modern and more comfortable standard of living for them as they age.

Budget

The initial design budget was €175,000 for the renovation/extension of the cottage.

While the daughter’s plan was designed to maximise sea views to the front of the site leading to a reversal of a traditional layout, with living upstairs and sleeping downstairs.

Results

The new design was informed by the existing rural context of the site, of its exaggerated site contours and ultimately the planners. The design resulted in a completely reworked plan of the existing house layout, maximising views and solar gain to the front of the site, with a two storey Barn extension to the rear, housing the sleeping accommodation.
